Well once again we can see the effects of removing surge arrestors from smart meters as has been pointed out countless times across North America before the meters were installed and of course after installations when we see the effects of this blatant stupidity.

Note this quote: “I’ve been doing this a little over 30 years, and this is definitely a first for me,” Zents said. “We were fortunate that nobody was hurt.”
Hmmm… could that be from the fact that for the past 30 years no one was dumb enough to remove the surge arrestors from the meters which ground the meter to the base, sending surges to ground instead of blowing up meters and appliances?
This critical difference is what is causing these issues. You can see from the above what happens with surges (large or small) and why. The first pic is analogue (older style) meters with surges arrestors:

So, it was asked, who will pay and who will get blamed for the utilities incompetence?
Well, if it is anything like the other times this has been reported (and I am sure there are many that have not made the news) the homeowner pays. Look what happened in this case:
Who gets blamed? Who Pays? You have you answer folks:
A better question would be ‘Who in their right mind would remove the surge arrestors on the meters and put ALL buildings at risk of fire in the first place’
What we know:
These type of surge events happen all the time.
Sometimes these surges can be so large there is not much anything could do to stop it from doing what it does besides properly protecting your home.
Pennsylvania utilities have had a long history of smart meter fires and it is a wonder that no one is in jail yet for this crime. Small reminder (if you do not recall) for those people living in BC who are seeing this that the same man who oversaw the Pennsylvania lunacy, was the head of the Smart Meter Program in BC Gary Murphy.
Laughing all the way to the bank while your house, right now, is a fire hazard due to this con man.
15 to 26, to 500 fires. Absolutely unreal.
Here is a fire that happened in Toronto just a few weeks back.
If you watch the video, you will notice the utilities always talk about the 105 000 meters recalled in Saskatchewan and ‘not to worry, the meters we use aren’t those meters’ to dupe people into believing this is isolated. It is not. The ALL use the same technology and ALL have the same flaws, Period. This is also their excuse to blame it on the homeowners base, which if it was ‘faulty’ then why did you install the meter in the first place?
Guess who this one was blamed on? Yep, the homeowner which is the cause 100% of the time.
If you are a firefighter in BC (or anywhere for that matter) it is time to stand up. It is also time to realize that your very own pension fund was used as a clearing house for the BC Liberal insiders and your pension fund managers to make a fortune off putting you and your family in danger.
In BC, you have an election coming up. We must all note that the NDP did absolutely nothing on this file despite the fact it literally could have taken down the liberals in the 2013 election and even without that, they are supposed to be the opposition and look into these matters but they were too busy enjoying their $100 000+ a year to be in 2nd place to protect your family.
BC Hydro is insolvent. They need to sell the data in order to stay afloat just like all utilities who are facing huge losses due to DECREASING demand.
The data is the key and this is why we are ALL collateral in this data scheme, they are both broke and greedy at the same time and yes, the media is completely in on the act.
See how they are literally selling the story for BC Hydro that ‘the increases are for the ever growing need for power’ Um, nope, that is a lie… what we would in the real world call Fake News or ‘Post Truth’
Here is another chart (courtesy Northern Insights Blog) just in case people don’t believe it is possible that despite population increases, power demand has flatlined, for a decade straight while BC LIBERAL, BC HYDRO, BCUC promised IPP’s 10’s of Billions in sweetheart deals for power we don’t even use or need in exchange for campaign donations. That, folks, is the real reason rates are going up because the BC Liberals under the eye of the NDP let this happen.
If you think BC is isolated, this is the same for the entire USA, for 15 years straight also and part of why they are putting every building in that country at risk of fire, for data, to keep utilities afloat.

There are at least two good (for the smart meter mfr) reasons why the spark gaps were eliminated. First, is pragmatic in that a plasma discharge in the immediate proximity of sensitive electronic equipment can either damage such or make it loose its memory (both data and or program). A plasma discharge (spark) generates high power electromagnetic noise over a wide frequency spectrum and often causes unpredictable interference. I know and understand such because I am a retired electronic power controls engineer and have struggled with this issue for my entire career.
The second involves agency approvals. While a spark gap can be approved, the typical spark gap found in legacy meters are of an empirical design that simply works, but avoids classic spark gap design rules–an approved spark gap would take hundreds of thousands of dollars to get tested and approved by UL or other independent testing house, and would not fit in the footprint of the existing meter. Although the empirical spark gap design may be somewhat deficient in energy handling capacity, the synergistic effect of thousands of grid-connected spark gaps (all legacy meters) can not be underestimated–they simply have been proven to be very effective.
The bottom line is that the consumer is left holding the bag when it comes to lighting or surge damage to structures and appliances–neither the manufacture nor the utility accepts responsibility……and certainly not the PUC that was originally established to protect the consumer.
The obvious solution is to bring back the legacy meter!

Excellent points! We have been suspicious of this for some time. And this goes to show that data sales is by far the most important aspect of this program. Our safety is of no concern for utilities now, or ever, it is just about profits. They are losing on power sales so they needed an alternate revenue stream, which is the data sales. This is absolutely criminal what is going on on all fronts from the media, politicians, meter makers and power dealers. Thanks for your comment!

Ironically, the spark gap transient voltage arrestors would protect the smart meter itself form such surges. It is especially important because the new designs that have the additional failure mode of the off-line switching regulator power supply that tend to be marginal when connected to 230VAC.

If those unidentified thugs in their unmarked vehicles show up to force me to either take a smart meter or have my power cut off then there is going to be a lot of publicity because it will not be open for discussion; I will be protecting my property to whatever extent required. Should generate at least one or two news stories.

Stay away from any thing that could be considered violent for the media will jump all over this kind of story and paint you/meter resistors as the bad guys.

There seems to be no other way to get any kind of media coverage. Have written letters to the papers which don’t get published, contacted my local political representative with no result (too busy trying to get re elected I guess) and made numerous phone calls all to no avail. The public apparently is unaware of this whole situation and if it takes something like stopping someone from illegally cutting off my power then at the very least there will be a police report.
It seems the only way to get this story out. All I am doing is drawing a line and any consequences will be the result of them crossing that line.

My itron just went up in flames. Nice. My house was built in 1896 and would have gone up in flames. DTE pulled the meter right away. They knew.

QC HYdro was here to day to change our meter,but could not as wiring had to be changed. They said we will recieve a call for an aptmt soon. The thing is wehad a fire in our mast Jan 14,2016. The wiring melted and was arching and shooting sparks and fire balls into the house. It took the City to cut our power,as Hydro would not by my call. I fought with Hydro for a year to get reimbursed for the damage, but they would not take responsibility for it. My problem they said. I finally gave up. Wish I could prove the cause,meter or otherwise. Norm Klemm

Such a tragic, yet typical story of utilities and government collusion against respobsibility. It is the data they want and they will risk everything for it and thus always blame the homeowner. We are all just collateral damage for that data!~
